Choosing a place to live often goes beyond the home itself, because where we live is about the community around us, the connectivity to schools, workplaces, amenities, transport links and accessibility, among others.
Finding the right location to live in that can support you at all stages of your life, from a young working professional to raising a family to later life can be difficult, but with more urban villages popping up than ever before, homeowners have a chance to find communities that will support them for life.
Waterford as a region continues to rapidly expand and evolve, being a location that provides a holistic community to work, play and live.
With new urban villages already established and many more on the way, the Greater Waterford Area offers abundant opportunity and promise for homeowners.
Thinking Ahead: The Greater Waterford Area
It comes as no surprise that the ongoing development of The North Quays will contribute to a significant amount of Waterford’s growth over the next decade and beyond.
Connectivity
One of the most notable benefits of the North Quays project is the connectivity it will provide between the city and commuter regions, enhancing accessibility into and out of the main City Centre.
Strategic planning for transportation and connectivity means that locations such as Ferrybank, that have often been seen as a far stretch from Waterford, will now see more hassle-free commuting to and from the area, available in more ways than one.
For example, with the site of the new train station to be located within the North Quays development, quick and easy access to a variety of routes across the country will be accessible to those on either side of the river.
Also not forgetting the ever-popular greenway, this will also provide safer and carbon-neutral transport options, in addition to an excellent source of social and recreational activity.
With accessibility from a number of locations currently and its continued expansion to areas such as New Ross, the greenway will continue to connect people further afield.
Most of all, one of the most simple but effective additions coming from the North Quays project is the development of the footbridge, which will allow for on-foot commuting to and from Waterford City Centre playing an instrumental role in fostering and nurturing a connection between the those in the city and those across the way in the Ferrybank community.
Employment
The North Quays will be a hub of activity, providing residences, offices, street retail, visitor and event centres and a hotel, contributing to a wealth of opportunities for job creation and stable employment for those who seek it.
Outside of the North Quays Development, Waterford itself is a hub for employment seeing companies across a variety of industries (Tech, Pharma, Life Sciences etc.) bringing a myriad of job offerings to the area, often with a commuting time of just 10 to 15 minutes from most residential developments.
With supporting transport links and connectivity options, whether you live in Kilkenny or Waterford, access to this development will be majorly improved, making it even more feasible for people to live in Kilkenny and work in Waterford, or vice versa.
Education
SETU continues to provide educational opportunities to the region, and with its ongoing physical expansion to a new site and the addition of course options, the University has the ability to support undergraduates, mature students, postgraduates and others, with an impressive suite of options and new career paths.
Housing
Housing development across Waterford is happening rapidly, with lively, friendly and sustainable urban villages providing much-needed residence and community to every type of homeowner.
Looking at villages such as Summerfields and Carrigea Crescent located in Waterford, these communities support workers, students, and families with employment and education opportunities in a convenient location with quick commuting options to and from if desired.
The ongoing development of Abbey Meadows in Ferrybank is another great example of a soon-to-be urban village, supported primarily by Ross Abbey Town but with the added benefit of becoming just a short commute to Waterford, upon the completion of the North Quays development.
