International Commercial Flights to Recommence in Waterford Airport After Seven Years Since the Last Commercial Flight
Comer Group International has joined forces with the Bolster Group to spearhead a major multi-million investment in Waterford Airport, delivering an extended runway capable of catering for international flights. At City Hall in Waterford on Friday, December 1, the Minister for Finance, Michael McGrath TD, and William Bolster, Executive of Waterford Airport announced the airport is to receive €12 million in private sector investment by the Comer Group International, in partnership with Bolster Group. The remainder of this investment can now be sought from a process to begin with central and local government funding.
Waterford Airport’s expansion is Comer’s first large investment in the South-East of lreland. Company executives say the deal represents a major vote of confidence in Waterford and will create jobs and boost economic growth. The new runway will have the capacity to service large and mid-range airliners such as the widely used Airbus 320s.
This development has been driven forward by the Construction, flooring, and engineering firm Bolster Group since 2016 and it is due to their forward thinking and determination along with the partnership with Galway natives, the Comers brothers that this development is now coming to fruition.
“It will be a real game changer in terms of bringing back travel to the region”.
Comer Group director Luke Comer and William Bolster, executive of Waterford airport, said in a joint statenent: “We are delighted to announce the runway expansion, which will reopen up travel to the UK and European destinations all year round.
“Those local to the area have had to travel to Dublin or Cork to catch flights over the last seven years and the time absolutely felt right to bring the airport back to life with much-needed investment and put Waterford firmly back on the international map.
“We believe this expansion will be welcome news for locals, driving tourism and business opportunities, as well as the Irish population who have made their home in the UK”.
It’s expected flights from the airport to London will begin towards the end of 2024 with other destinations to follow. Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, welcomed the announcement which he said is “hugely important for Waterford and the South East Region”. This development has the potential to boost economic growth in the South East immensely, we are very excited about this development and as stated by Micheal Walsh, Chief Executive of Waterford City & County Council “This is a monumental moment for Ireland’s oldest city”.
